What is N Gauge?
N Gauge model railways are half the size of their ‘00’counterparts and an N Gauge layout takes up only a quarter of the space of a similar ‘00’ layout. The ‘N’ stands for nine (the gauge, i.e. distance between the rails, being 9mm). It conveniently is the same letter in other languages such as “neuf” in French, “neun” in German and “nove” in Italian and in eight other European languages.
What is the N Gauge Society?
The N Gauge Society was formed in 1967 by a group of like-minded railway modellers, who modelled in what was then, the new small model railway called “N Gauge”. They wanted to support the traders producing “N Gauge” and ensure that there were common standards being used. The Society has flourished to the extent that it now has over 6,000 members and produces ready-to run wagons which consistently pick up awards such as “model of the year”. This is because the committee are all keen railway modellers themselves and know what other N Gauge modellers want.
The Society publishes a bi-monthly “Journal”, which is packed with colour pages of member’s layouts, hints & tips, product reviews, news and competitions. It has developed from an early Roneo stencil production of 10 pages written on a typewriter to the present 100 page, professionally produced, all-colour magazine on glossy paper and is TOTALLY N Gauge related.
What is an Area Group?
In the early days, before the Internet, the Journal was the only means of communication between N Gauge modellers and in the 1980’s it was decided to encourage members to form local area groups. These groups met at one another’s houses where members would discuss railway modelling matters and usually be treated to viewing their host’s own layout. Such groups still exist but many have opted to hire a local hall where they can meet and work on a communal layout.
The North Wales Group began in this way, meeting at the Memorial Hall in Llandudno Junction on a monthly basis and started building an exhibition layout. The meeting room was small however and there was insufficient room for the layout to be put together in its full form. Apart from this, there were no storage facilities – so pieces of the layout had to be brought each month and assembled so that we could work on them – then disassembled to take home again. As the layout boards usually had to be transported on their edge (to fit in cars), there were obvious problems if glue had not set or paint was still wet!
Our then Chairman found alternative premises at St Michaels Church Hall Conwy a large hall with storage facilities. .
Unfortunately in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic we found the premises closed.indefinitely and uitimately never to reopen. Our current Chairman Gareth MInords however has secured the use of the Sea Cadets Hall in Deganwy for the group which also has, most importantly, storage facilities.
